8pm, Saturday May 3, come see me playing bari sax in the MIT Festival Jazz Ensemble!
This concert celebrates the 40th anniversary of the FJE.
Guest conductor: Herb Pomeroy -- founder of the FJE, and its director from 1963-1985. Herb is a phenomenal and intense teacher. I've never had a director who rehearsed an ensemble with such focus and blazing efficiency. I've also never had a director who had such a crisply defined sense of the sound he wanted the ensemble to produce. It's fascinating to watch him honing the nuances of our playing into precisely the ensemble he wants us to be; it reminds me of the description of marble sculpting as the art of releasing the form hidden inside the stone. I'm sure I've never before learned so much about music from a single person in such a short time.
We will be playing tunes from the entire history of the ensemble's repertoire.
May 3, 8pm, Kresge Auditorium. $3 at the door.
